The federal Ombudsman takes a particular interest in complaints against the ATO, and it has a special adviser for tax matters, based in Canberra but with officers in state capitals. The Ombudsman can investigate the ATO’s handling of a matter and make recommendations, but cannot reverse assessment decisions. If your complaint is of poor handling of your affairs by the ATO, the Ombudsman may provide an effective remedy.
