A paper return lodged early in July may be dealt with in three or four weeks, one lodged in September may take 10 weeks.

Self-assessment and electronic lodgement have speeded up the process, so if no reply is received within about 10 weeks, it is worth inquiring about the progress of the return at the ATO, which can at least confirm that the return has been received.
