The Chief Executive Officer of the department may grant special leave of absence to a prisoner for such things as medical treatment, education, training or community service or for compassionate purposes. While on special leave a prisoner will normally be accompanied by a supervising prison officer. The leave may be subject to certain conditions and can be cancelled at any time [Correctional Services Act 1982 s.27].
