Patient's Statement of Rights
Where a patient is detained in an Approved Treatment Centre she or he must be given a statement of their rights in a language or form which the patient would understand, if this is possible [Mental Health Act 1993 s 15]. Further, unless it is not in the best interests of the patient, a relative over 18 years old (a spouse, domestic partner, parent, brother, sister, son or daughter or a carer) must be given a copy of the patient's statement of rights. The form of the statement of rights is contained in the Mental Health Regulations. Doctors, nurses and social workers working in the Approved Treatment Centre can be asked for a copy of the patient Statement of Rights.
