What does the law say about carrying weapons, such as a knife?

The law is the same for everyone, including your parents. You are not allowed to carry (have with you in a public place) a knife or dangerous weapon, such as guns or clubs. The law also says that you cannot have in your possession an implement for housebreaking or an article of disguise.

[Summary Offences Act 1953 s 15]

Firearms

All firearms have the potential to be dangerous and therefore there are strict rules that control their possession and use. There are four different categories of firearms. In 1996 significant changes were made to the law regarding firearms.

[Firearms Act 1997 s 5]

How old do I have to be to apply for a firearm licence?

You cannot apply for a firearm licence until you are aged 18. However, if you are 15 or over and are the relative of a person who holds a licence who carries on the business of primary production (e.g. farming) you can. You are breaking the law if you have or use a firearm for a purpose not authorised by the licence.

[Firearms Act 1997 s 12(3) & 12(4)]

All new, replacement, or varied firearm licences must include a photograph of the holder of the licence.

[Firearms Act 1997 s19A(1)]

What if I have a gun but not a licence?

If you are aged 18 years or over and have a firearm in your possession you must have a Firearms Licence even if you do not own the firearm. An application for a “Firearms Licence” and “Approval to purchase a firearm” may be obtained from your nearest police station. If you are under 18 you cannot obtain a dealer’s licence.
