CITIZENSHIP

What is citizenship?

When a person has citizenship of a particular country they have certain rights in that country. For example, an Australian citizen has the right to vote, join the army, get a passport and run for public office.

When can I apply for Australian citizenship?

You must have proof that you have been a permanent resident of Australia for a total of two years in the five year period immediately preceding your application and proof that you are 18 or over. If you are under 18 you will require your guardian’s consent. It usually takes three months for approval before the ceremony. If you are a refugee with no ‘proof’ of age or do not have parental consent you may need help in preparing an application to the Immigration Department [Australian Citizenship Act 2007].
