DISCRIMINATION & EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

Do the Equal Opportunity laws apply to me?

Yes, they do. They apply to all South Australians. Discriminating against people because of their sex, sexuality, marital status, race, age, disability or pregnancy in the areas of employment, education, accommodation and the provision of services e.g. (at shops, hotels, night clubs, doctors or dentists) could be unlawful.

Sexual harassment is also against the law. It means unwelcome behaviour of a sexual nature at school or at work that causes or makes you feel bad, uncomfortable, frightened or offended.

[Equal Opportunity Act 1984 ]

How do I make a complaint?

To make a complaint contact the office of Equal Opportunity Commission by letter, phone or in person. The Equal Opportunity Act 1984 protects people who lodge complaints against victimization as a result of lodging a complaint.

All enquiries to the Commission are free and confidential.

Can I make a complaint against State Government departments?

Yes, you can. The State Government has a special person called an Ombudsman who looks into complaints. The Ombudsman is independent and does not take sides. If you think that someone in a government department or local council had treated you unfairly, done something wrong, or has not taken action, you can ring or call in to see the Ombudsman and tell your story and he/she will look at it.
