YOUNG OFFENDERS

The object of the Young Offenders Act 1993 as set out in Section 3 is to secure for youths who offend against the criminal law the care, correction and guidance necessary for their development into responsible and useful members of the community and the proper realisation of their potential. It is extremely important that the youth be made aware of his or her obligations under the law and of the consequences of a breach of the law. The protection of the community is an important aim and victims should be awarded compensation and restitutionwhere appropriate. As well, the Act requires that consideration be given to preserving and strengthening the young person's family relationships, and their sense of racial, ethnic or cultural identity should not be impaired. It is also an important consideration in the sentencing process that there should be no unnecessary interruption of the young person's education or employment.
