NEGLECTED OR ABUSED CHILDREN
The Children's Protection Act 1993 s 11 imposes a duty on certain people to notify Families SA where they suspect on reasonable grounds that a child has been, or is being, abused or neglected and the suspicion is formed in the course of the person's work (whether paid or voluntary) or in carrying out official duties. People who are required to notify the Department include doctors, nurses, dentists, police officers, psychologists, social workers, pharmacists, teachers, family day care providers and any employee or volunteer in an agency (government and non-government) engaged in or responsible for the delivery of health, education, child care or residential services wholly or partly for children.
A notification must be accompanied by a statement detailing observations, information and opinions upon which suspicion is based [Children's Protection Act 1993 s 11(3)]. Each notification of child abuse is investigated, and appropriate action is taken to ensure the child is protected, see children at risk of abuse or neglect.
